Physically Challenged
Irish and American Youth Team

Our organization provides electric wheelchairs, prosthetic devices, and other necessary medical care for Irish and American children. Thanks to all the volunteers and financial support on both sides of the ocean, great work is being done for these wonderful children and their families.

In addition, we have established a program to assist children both in Ireland and the United States with special medical needs -- treatment and care sponsored by the team and doctors in the U.S. Here are three of our kids, Lina, Eoin, and Denise, representing three of our most ambitious efforts.

Lina Demarest

Lina and Bill.

Our "Profile in Courage Award" winner this past year was Lina Demarest. Here are some excerpts from a letter Lina's mother, Laura, wrote to us:
"...Lina was burned by a candle that caught fire to netting around her crib at 7 days of age. She was so young that it was impossible to graft the skin from her own body so synthetic skin was used. Her biological mother relinquished Lina immediately after bringing her to the hospital. She was in the hospital for 7 months and then given to series of foster families in Colombia....

"We began the paperwork to be a foster home through Healing the Children and Lina was given to us on January 14, 2004 at the age of four. When she came to us she couldn’t speak... and was a child with no boundaries.

"She has had four surgeries at Shriner's and things probably would have continued in this direction except, her visa was denied after our 5th extension. Our family had decided that Lina was so much a part of us that we would adopt her....

"Since we now have insurance I started doing research on the internet for doctors specializing in reconstructive burn survivor surgery. I sent e-mails to several doctors...

"Then I received a call from Dr. Rose. He said the first thing I need to do is meet him.... After spending about two hours with Dr. Rose I was so excited for Lina, then it was time to sit with Linda. She said it would be a lot of money to do all that needed to be done for Lina. The tears streamed down my face. I left the office that day with a determination to pray -- A LOT.

"I was told by Dr. Rose's staff about your organization and your devotion to helping children in need.... Dr. Rose said that you always find a way to help children..."

Eoin Smith (before and after)

Eoin Smith before.
Eoin Smith after.

Eoin is fifteen years old and was severely burned in a household accident at the age of nine. At age eleven he was picked to be a member of the Physically Challenged Irish Team and while he was in New York with the team, we brought him to Dr. Elliott Rose who is world renowned for his surgical techniques with facial burn victims. After four years and a series of surgeries, we think you will agree that Eoin has made remarkable progress. The final surgery has alleviated the scarring on his chin apparent in the above photograph. We await final photos documenting the completion of his healing process.

Denise Lehane (before and after)

Denise before.
Denise after.

Denise is a young lady from County Cork, Ireland, whose face was tragically and severely burned on the family farm at the age of nine months. Eight of her fingers had to be amputated and she also suffered severe burns on her arms and legs.

The reconstruction of her face after 20 operations in Ireland was not entirely successful and was discontinued at age 11. We brought her to the United States when she was 13 years old and for the past eight years she has spent 3 months each summer undergoing plastic surgery on her face. Denise's surgeries were also performed by Dr. Elliott Rose. Denise is thrilled not only with the results, but also with the new life Dr. Rose and our charity have helped give her.

If you would like to help our organization continue to help children like Eoin and Denise, and two American team members, Desiree Laguna and Lina Demarest, both having been severely burned and just beginning a series of surgeries that will extend over a two to three year period, please consider making a contribution by sending a check (payable to "P.C. Team") to the Physically Challenged Irish & American Youth Team, 7 Dey Street, Suite 700, New York, NY, 10007. If you want to pay by credit card (or PayPal), you may use the "Make a Donation" button in the right-hand column of this page.
